Frumgewrit of Folcfeld Scír
Here is made known in this writ that Þórbeorht Hláford, Cyning of the Wínland Ríce, has set Folcfeld Scír as a shire of the Ríce for the holding of those free Théodsmen who are without a nearby Léode or Théod and who have no hold that would otherwise bind them to the Ríce’s web of oaths. Be it deemed that:
- The Cyining, as the lord of Folcfeld Scír, will set over the shire a Geréfa (Reeve) unto whom shall be given the right and reach to collect the Ríce’s gild and also to call and hold shire-moot as often as the reeve deems needful, though no less than twice a year.
- This shall be pledge that the folk of that shire will make, either before the Cyning or before the shire’s Geréfa, upon fulfilling their leornerescipe and earning the árung of ceorl:
“I (name) hereby swear upon this holy ring, before the gods and the world, to cleave to Théodish thew and to love and give leave to the holy Cyning of the Théodish Ríce. While I live, I shall never raise word, hand nor weapon against him, lest it be in self-defense, nor shall I ever aid or abet any other who does so. I hereby bend my life to rightful deeds with a Right Good Will, in Wisdom, Wealthdeal and Worthmind. Ever will I seek to keep the Cyning’s frith.”
To which wermen shall add:
“Moreover, if it is made, I will answer the call to the fyrd to ward the Ríce against fiend and foe.”
- To the folk of this shire is given a likeness of Harold Godwinson’s golden “Fighting Man”set against a background of blue, to be their cumbol (banner).
- Moreover, as Folcfeld Scír’s first Geréfa, Þórbeorht Hláford Cyning has set Friðoric Þegn of Æppeldor Léod in Tasmania.
